As you enter the park itself, the drastic change in landscape is a sight to see itself. The contrast between the green of the hills and the tans, grays, and whites of the badlands is quite remarkable.
The Badlands themselves are beautiful and reminiscent of an alien planet. We stopped at numerous overlooks to take pictures and soak in the majesty of this place. As we had Bitey with us, we were limited in our ability to explore. Our plan was just to pass through the park on our way to Custer State Park, but both of us would gladly return to broaden our exploration of this remarkable place.
Even though our exploration was limited, the Badlands scenic drive that runs through the park is a good way to get an overview of the park. Around every corner, there are beautiful formations, views, and colors.
The Badlands are also a good place for wildlife viewing…
We saw these male and female bighorns within five minutes of entering the park…
There were numerous other bighorn scattered throughout the area…
Including this adorable, fearless, and agile little baby…
We caught this hawk posing for pictures…
And this prairie dog (also posing)…
As well as numerous other prairie dogs…
And the wildest animal of all…
We also spotted a number of buffalo…
And as we were leaving, we ran into this guy who was much closer than the others…
It was a good preview of what was to come as we were heading to Custer State Park next.
