Day 27: Sioux Falls SD (Eric)

Day 27 (June 25, 2021): After leaving Indiana Dunes, we were heading towards the Badlands National Park and Custer State Park with a few stops along the way.

Our route took us past Chicago where in addition to encountering more traffic than we were used to on this trip, the rain got even worse. There was a point where the visibility was so bad that we considered pulling over. However, we made it through without incident and headed towards Wisconsin where we stopped at the Mouse House to get some cheese and fudge. This stop was largely due to the number of billboards we passed along the route advertising the place. We had a few other similar stops that I will get to later. Anyway, both the cheese and the fudge were delicious, so if you happen to be driving through the area, it’s worth a stop even though it looks a little bit cheesy from the outside, pun intended.

We also passed through Minnesota on our way to the next stopover in the town of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. We didn’t stop anywhere here, but coincidentally enough, we were listening to the sentencing of Derek Chauvin on the radio as we were passing within a 100 miles of Minneapolis.

Anyway, we arrived in Sioux Falls with enough time to explore this charming, little city. The Clubhouse Hotel and Suites Jenny found had beautiful grounds and was just a few minutes from Falls Park and the downtown area. We also saw rabbits on our way to dinner at the Carino’s that was in the same parking lot. We thought about finding a more unique place to eat dinner, but we were both hungry, and you couldn’t beat the convenience.

After an early dinner, we went to explore Falls Park. This is a beautiful park that as the name suggests contains the falls from which Sioux Falls derived its name. It was a nice evening, and it was cool to see the number of people out and about enjoying the park.

After leaving the park, it was a few minute drive to get to downtown which is a cool place to walk around. They had a music festival going on at the outdoor venue in the area. In addition to a number of shops and restaurants, downtown also has numerous sculptures lining the streets as well as street performers.  All of this made Sioux Falls a vibrant and fun place to explore.

Including a replica of Michelangelo’s David…

And an arch that lights up at night…

The next morning before we left town Jenny found a cool breakfast place in the downtown area called Josiah’s. While we tried to get there early, we didn’t anticipate the popularity of the place. Not to mention, it was raining so the outdoor seating wasn’t being used, and Sioux Falls had organized a Pride celebration for that day which contributed to the crowds. The food at Josiah’s was good, and it was fun to people watch as the crowds gathered to celebrate Pride.
